But Mandrake can disclose that the "racy" work of fiction, due to be published by Macmillan at the end of last year, may never see the light of day following an announcement by her collaborator, Laura Van Wormer, an American historian.

Miss Van Wormer admits that even her friends and family are getting impatient about the book's release which has been delayed indefinitely. She says: "The Duchess and I are reconsidering our original publishing plan and weighing a number of factors and options for the short term and for the long run. As soon as we come to a decision about which path we are to take, you shall know."

Set in 1812, Hartmoor tells the story of "fiery, redheaded Lady Margaret Montagu" who travels to America to find her kidnapped father and is said to be based on the author's Irish ancestry.

Fergie, whose previous literary scribblings include Budgie the Little Helicopter, said in the past that the plot "will pertain to and have some parallels to my own life, although this isn't a story about me".
