The weather is cooling off (thank goodness), and the Children's Room staff of the Hilton Head Island Branch of the Beaufort County Public Library is re-energized. We are ordering new books, DVDs and audio books. It is always fun to see the newest children's materials.
The Fall Story Time program is now in full swing. There is still space available in a wide variety of daily programs. We also encourage visitors to the island to come to our story times on a space-available basis. These free programs are great fun for you and your child -- stories, songs, finger plays and take-home activities are just part of the adventure. Story times are a wonderful way to acquaint your child with the joys of reading. They're also an excellent place to meet other parents and for your child to interact with other children.
There is the enthusiastic and rambunctious Lapsit Program for little ones ages 12 months to 24 months; the ever-popular Mother Goose Program for 2- and 3-year-olds; and the exciting Bookworm Program for 4- and 5-year-olds. Every Saturday at 10 a.m. there is the Do-Drop-In Story Time for children of all ages.
Before you know it, the monthly Super Saturday Programs -- sponsored by the Friends of the Hilton Head Branch Library -- will be starting. These free family programs are conducted by professional performers offering a variety of talent. We have had actors, jugglers, puppeteers, artists, story tellers, magicians and musicians perform.
The Friends of the Library will also be sponsoring a series of four programs just for our littlest patrons newborns to 6 months.Beth Green, the very talented "Music Lady," will be presenting these programs at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 25 and Nov. 1. The fourth program will be 12:30 p.m. Nov. 8. In each class participants will be exploring parental-musical bonding, baby sign language, certified infant massage techniques choreographed to music, and musical stimulus and response activities. Each class will be different and unique. You may register for each session in person, by phone or by e-mailing
jmorgan@bcgov.net.
The first Bedtime Story Program will be 6:45 p.m. Oct. 23. This family program has become one of our most popular programs and is so much fun. Children come in their pajamas with their favorite stuffed animal, and we read, sing and have a great time. Little ones will leave with a bedtime snack and some theme-related take-home ideas. No registration is required. November's program is scheduled for the 20th.
Halloween also means trick or treat at the library. Join the staff in dressing up for this fun-filled day. The little ones get to trick or treat throughout the library for all sorts of goodies from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 31.
Even if you aren't able to attend one of the numerous programs offered, just come to the library with your child to read; play in our activity center; hold your own puppet show; use the three educational games computers; listen to a book on tape at the listening center; or just have a relaxing, quiet moment to look at the beautiful artwork. You will always be greeted with a warm welcome in the Children's Room.
