Well I must admit that, in the end I was a great deal disappointed with Persuasion. I liked the movie which we own as well as Emma and Pride and Predjudice and also Sense and Sensibility(just finished watching it) but the book left me quite unmoved.
The thing is, while it goes along the same vein as the others, which in my opinion is simply soap operas, gossip turned into a story as it were, the characters were not developed and delved into nearly enough.
And seriously, Anne seemed herself so dull and uninspiring apart from her duties as maid, child minder and sister minder as imposed upon her by her family, that I didn't really cheer for her much and I always want to deeply identify with something strong in the character of the heroine or hero.
I cannot quite explain it but she was just rather dull to me. I think the fact she was so very capable in anything she did and had a fine mind was in themselves reason to really delve deeply into her psyche and cause her to do some truly complex and strong things, like the other characters of the other stories.
Personally I do not like Miss Elizabeth Bennett, she jumps to conclusions too quickly,is a notoriously bad judge of character etc. But she did it with such passion one could not help but admire her. Anne just sort of goes along with this that and the other thing and does not even attempt to say anything to her rude hateful older sister on her own behalf. Whatever we are outside in society, usually we can manage to say at least something at least a couple of times in our lives to our siblings when being mistreated. Something, anything.
Well enough of that. I would read it again only because it is Jane's work and so has a flavour to it that I like, like wearing a really comfortable old sweater, but for no other reason.
