Okay, since we all seem to be on a little firmer footing and more settled lately, April is half way through, what do you say to giving May a whole book to review again?
Two weeks to think about it.

I put our names in a hat and this is the order they came out in.....

Durga
Katherine,
Marc,
Myself...........

Maybe we could each suggest two or three books each one from a different genre? just to give it more variety?

Okay, I'm assuming Durga will be okay with it too, but if I am wrong I'm sorry Durga

I shall come up with a few choices later today as my selection in different genres. I'm always open to reading something out of my usual circle

Ok here's my selection to give you thought. :)

1.

Genre:
Family Saga.

Title: NEVER SAY NEVER ~ Elizabeth Waite

Image

Synopsis.

This is a heartwarming family saga from a bestselling author. It is 1930, and the sleepy Hampshire village where Emma Pearson lives with her husband and two daughters is untouched by the Depression that has ravaged much of the country, causing poverty and hardship. When the villagers are asked to offer a rural holiday to orphaned children from the poorest parts of London, they welcome the opportunity to share their good fortune. John and Tommy, the two lads who stay with the Pearsons, become a part of the family.Years later, when World War II breaks out, Emma must watch not only her own two girls, but also the boys who are now like sons to her, play their parts in the dramatic world events that are unfolding...

2.

Genre: Crime

Title: The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher: or the Murder at Road Hill House ~ Kate Summerscale

Image

Synopsis

'It is a beautiful piece, written with great lucidity and respect for the reader, and with immaculate restraint. A classic, to my mind, of the finest documentary writing.' John Le Carre 'A pacy analysis of a true British murder case from 1860, the unravelling of which involved one of the earliest Scotland Yard detectives and inspired sensation novelists such as Dickens and Wilkie Collins Absolutely riveting' Sarah Waters, Guardian 'Summerscale has constructed nothing less than a masterpiece My shelves are stacked with books about crime, but none more satisfying than this' Craig Brown, Mail on Sunday 'Sparse, melancholy, beautifully written the year's most beguiling biography' Independent

3.

Genre : Psychology

Title: Nudge: Descisions about health, Wealth and Happiness ~ Richard H. Thaler.

Image

Synopsis

'I love this book. It is one of the few books I've read recently that fundamentally changes the way I think about the world' Steven Levitt, author of Freakonomics 'This is a book that every CEO, or aspiring CEO, will want to read' James Kilts, former CEO of Gillette 'A manifesto for using the recent behavioral research to help people, as well as government agencies, companies and charities, make better decisions' New York Times 'A must-read for anyone who wants to see both our minds and our society working better. It will improve your decisions and it will make the world a better place' Daniel Kahneman, Nobel Laureate in Economics 'Nudge is as important a book as any I've read in perhaps 20 years' Barry Schwartz, author of The Paradox of Choice 'I am badly remiss for not heartily, vigorously, unabashedly endorsing for your immediate and intense attention the relatively new Nudge, by Richard Thaler and Cass Sunstein' Tom Peters, manangement guru 'Richard Thaler and Cass Sunstein's "Nudge" is a wonderful book. More fun than any important book has a right to be - and yet it is truly both' Roger Lowenstein, author of When Genius Failed 'Nudge won't nudge you - it will knock you off your feet' Daniel Gilbert, author of Stumbling on Happiness

Are there two books The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher ?
I have The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher, A shocking Murder and the Undoing of a Great Victorian Detective by Kate Summerscale, it's been in my TBR stack for a while.

The one on my list is dated as 5th Jan 2009 and printed by Bloomsbury Publishing PLC. Yours is a Walker and Company reprint edition dated 24th Feb 2009

Now the one I have put on the list says this:
Quote:
the book tells the story of the Road Hill House murder of 1860, when a three year old boy was brutally slain by another occupant of his home. The book sets out to detail the case, from the original event to the investigation by Scotland Yard detective Jack Whicher, to the aftermath suffered by the entire family.

and the copy YOU own Katherine says this:

Quote:
The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher has a wide charter: Tell the story of the murder of three-year-old Saville Kent in his English country home, describe the police investigations, relate the public reaction to the murder and investigations, detail what happened to the characters, help us understand our psychological need to read detective fiction, and provide new insight into the seeds of the crime.

So I'm guessing from the descriptions there are one and the same :)

Thanks Issi. :)
I thought that was strange, as I was fairly certain there wasn't a series. lol

That's the one I'll vote for then, I've wanted to get to it for quite a while. I'd looked at it for months before I actually bought it, dithering. :)

My suggestions for this month's read are

1.

Genre: Horror

The Magic Cottage
- James Herbert

Image

Product Description

"We thought we'd found our haven, a cottage deep in the heart of the forest. Charming, maybe a little run down, but so peaceful. That was the first part of the Magic. Midge's painting and my music soared to new heights of creativity. That was another part of the Magic. Our love for each other - well, that became the supreme Magic. But the cottage had an alternative side - The Bad Magic." "What happened to us there was horrendous beyond belief. The healings, the crazy sect who wanted our home for themselves, the hideous creatures that crawled from the nether regions, and the bats - oh God, the bats! Even now those terrible things seem impossible to me. Yet they happened..." 'Beautifully orchestrated crescendo of suspense...Herbert had brought the shivers back to the genre.' - "Washington Post".

2.

Genre: Crime

When Will There be Good News? - Kate Atkinson

Image

Review

"In Atkinson's stellar third novel to feature ex-cop turned PI Jackson Brodie (after One Good Turn), unrelated characters and plot lines collide with momentous results... A lesser author would buckle under so many story lines, but Atkinson juggles them brilliantly, simultaneously tying up loose ends from Turn and opening new doors for further Brodie misadventures." -- "Publishers Weekly"

"It doesn't really matter in which genre Atkinson chooses to write. Her subject is always the irrecoverable loss of love and how best to continue living once you have glumly recognised that that was what the world was like, things improved but they didn't get better. Her gift is presenting this unnerving and subversive philosophy as a dazzling form of entertainment."" -- The Sunday Times

3.

Genre: Non Fiction

Gone Tomorrow - Lee Child

Image

Synopsis

Suicide bombers are easy to spot. They give out all kinds of tell-tale signs. Mostly because they're nervous. By definition they're all first-timers. Riding the subway in New York at two o'clock in the morning, Reacher knows the twelve giveaway signs to look out for. Watching one of his fellow-passengers, he becomes sharply aware: one by one, she ticks off every bulletpoint on his list. So begins the new heartstopping new thriller starring today's most admired action hero, the gallant and enigmatic loner Jack Reacher.

But i hope to read it still this month and i really can't wait - it sounds like a perfect crime story for me :)
