ANNIE MURRAY & "Where Earth Meets Sky"

Synopsis
Beautiful, dark-haired Lily has been abandoned in a Birmingham slum as a tiny child. With few clues as to her identity she endures a childhood of loneliness and loss. At eighteen she applies for a post as nanny with the family of a Captain Fairford, a soldier in Ambala, north India and his highly strung wife Susan. Lily is drawn into the emotional life of the Fairford family and adores her charge, two year old Cosmo. When, in 1907, Captain Fairford orders a new Daimler car, it is brought out by a young motor mechanic, Sam Ironside. Sam and Lily fall deeply in love, and it is only later that Lily learns that Sam is married and feels utterly betrayed. When Cosmo is later sent home to school, Lily finds another post with a Dr. McBride and his invalid wife, in a beautiful Himalayan hill station. The place is idyllic, and Lily settles for a quiet life. However, she is unprepared for the pain and misunderstandings that follow and force her to run from everything she has known ..."Where Earth Meets Sky" takes us from Edwardian England and the British Raj, through the darkness of the Great War to the glamour of Brooklands Race Track in the 1920s.

Spanning two continents, it is a story of enduring friendships and two hearts which cannot be kept apart.

Oh dear. it looks so good, but I have to opt out of this one, I'm afraid. The bookstores here don' stock it. This book an import and will take 2 weeks if I order it, even from Amazon.com.

OK, anyone else having problems attaining this? If so, I'll choose another we can all get hold of.

Liz, would you like me to send a copy to you? It'll cost you nothing and you'll have it in a few days!

OK, assuming Durga hasn't yet been able to find a copy of Where Earth Meets Sky, how about we try this one?

It's reasonably priced and available from Amazon.com

THE BEACH HOUSE By Jane Green

synopsis

Known in Nantucket as the crazy woman who lives in the rambling house atop the bluff, Nan doesn't care what people think. At sixty-five-years old, her husband died twenty years ago, her beauty has faded, and her family has flown. If her neighbors are away, why shouldn't she skinny dip in their swimming pools and help herself to their flowers? But when she discovers the money she thought would last forever is dwindling and she could lose her beloved house, Nan knows she has to make drastic changes.

So Nan takes out an ad: Rooms to rent for the summer in a beautiful old Nantucket home with water views and direct access to the beach. Slowly, people start moving into the house, filling it with noise, with laughter, and with tears. As the house comes alive again, Nan finds her family expanding. Her son comes home for the summer, and then an unexpected visitor turns all their lives upside-down.

I will have to sit out this month's book choice as I'm currently reading the last dark tower in the series so I want to finish that first before reading anything else. Will continue next month :)

 i didn't find it in the best bookshop around and in the library (they just have "Spellbound", which i took) - there is one more places i can check.
The internet places i am ordering from don't have it at the moment and i can't order from amazon (the cost is a bit too big - i pay for delivery and it becomes as expensive as 5 books here  )
In worst case i will write my thoughts at the end of September - someone from my family will be abroad and can bring it for me, if nothing else works. Hope it's ok with everyone if i will have to be a bit late with this one :confusion:

Do you have a copy of your own choice at home Durga?

What I was about to suggest then is that Liz and I can read 'The Beach House' as this months book club choice and our new member too if she can get hold of a copy. After I've read that I will grab hold of a copy of your book choice and then we can review that as well - just for this month.

That way we're all happy and you don't need to go to extra expense of buying a book that's just too expensive for you!

Once you've read your book ( Liz and I will be a little slower ) you can start a new thread about it, review it in there and we'll join in with our reviews when we've finished.

Next month, you can choose a different choice as it would be your choice anyway ( I think? ) :)

Jakki, that wouldn't be fair toward You and other members, i don't want to be too priviliged ;) - i will read Your choice, just a bit late (although i still hope to find it on Saturday at last-chance-place ;) ) I often have problems with finding books here and finances not always allow me to order from abroad. Let's hope in 1 year time it will be just a bad memory ;) I already talked with someone who will bring it for me from USA in September, if i will not buy it here. So don't worry about me. For now i've found two first chapters on Penguin website and it really looks interesting :)

Well my copy arrived this morning :)

I'm a little bit concerned as it's a hard back version and my fingers can't handle holding much weight at the moment. ( I keep dropping things as I can't grip them  ) so it may take me a little while longer to read than normal. Looking good though! :book:

i've send the title to my dad who is now in Jackson, Mississippi and if only he will have time and possibility he will bring it for me in September! :) Can't wait - two first chapters i've found online made me enormously curious!

I've finished the book. At first I thought, "Oh no, a "chick" book! But I soon got into it and couldn't put it down! I really enjoyed it, even if it might have wrapped up a little too prettily.

Jakki and Marc...have you read it? Since Durga can;t get the book until September, shall we go onto the next book and put The Beach House on hold until then?

Well we are both in the process of reading it now so it's best if we review this one first before moving on :)

Oh good Durga  I'm looking forward to your thoughts and review of it, it'll help me to judge whether or not she is consistant as a writer in her novels. I admit I do love authors who are fairly consistent with their writing. The topic always has to be completely different, but they style of writing and the intricate details which are immaculately researched are what matter to me.

If an author is inconsistent it drives me mad. Nothing worse than finding a new author who's written a book that left you wanting to read so much more of their works only to find out that was the only good one amongst them.

I'm half way through 'The Beach House' and to be honest the first two chapters had me completely bemused! I couldn't for the life of me see how they followed on from each other. Almost like reading two different books altogether, but as you read on all becomes very clear - and very enjoyable!

Not a chick-book at all, as Marc will say it's very much a bi-sexual book. ( Now THAT really did sound WRONG but you know what I mean by it - I hope  )
