Post subject: August Selection: The Accidental Tourist
PostPosted: Wed Jul 30, 2008 2:36 am
We're a few days away from August, so, according to the schedule*** I've chosen the book The Accidental Tourist, by Anne Tyler.
get your copy and start reading!

Image

From Library Journal
Scarred by grief after their 12-year-old son's senseless murder (he was shot by a holdup man in a Burger Bonanza), Macon and Sarah Leary are losing their marriage too. Macon is unable to cope when she leaves him, so he settles down ``safe among the people he'd started out with,'' moving back home with two divorced brothers and spinster sister Rose. Author of a series of guidebooks called ``Accidental Tourist'' for businessmen who hate to travel, Macon is Tyler's focus here, as she gently chronicles his journey from lonely self-absorption to an ``accidental'' new life with brassy Muriel, a dog trainer from the Meow Bow Animal Hospital, who renews and claims his heart. Not a character, including Macon's dog Edward, is untouched by delightful eccentricity in this charming story, full of surprises and wisdom. All of Tyler's novels are wonderful; thisher tenthis the best yet. Book Of The Month Club main selection. Janet Wiehe, P.L. of Cincinnati & Hamilton Cty.

***At presnt the book selection will be done in turns. This can be modified if a new member becomes a regular participant in the book club. Here's the current order for choosing:

August - Liz
Septemeber - Marc
October - Durga
November - Jakki

Have ordered my copy!

Shouldn't we include Margo on the list too now?

Thanks Jakki, right now I don't know how much I'll be able to contribute discussion wise, my plate is pretty full right now both reading and life-wise, I'd definitely like to down the road though.

I've just bought it yesterday and will start today evening. Unfortunately i had to take the Polish tranlsation (hardcover) - english copy (paperback) was having price 2 times bigger  I just don't understand why in a country where a single person reads not even 1 book per year on avarage, they make book prices so high! It will not help to educate the society for sure

I'm currently in dispute with Amazon over not having received the book. They've charged me for it, say it's been sent, but I have not received it. On checking with the post office deliveries they assure me no package has been sent to my address other than what I know I have received.

I've cancelled the order, demanded a full refund and have ordered it again! Fingers crossed I receive it this time.

I read the book in two days. I absolutely loved it! It takes place in Baltimore, 20 miinutes away from where I live. I know so many of the streets and locations mentioned in the book.. What a quirky, tender, funny, bittersweet story. I'm so sorry it ended...I wanted it to go on and on. :)

Since I had to be gone for so long, let's extend the discussion until Marc and Jakki get the book....is that ok?
